Real Indian Food: Healthy, Fresh and Delicious
Did you know that our authentic Indian dishes represent one of the healthiest diets in the world? How so?
The answer is simple: the majority of the nearly 10,000 Indian restaurants in the UK aren’t actually Indian at all – they’re Bangladeshi. The migration to the UK during the 1970s by people from Bangladesh, saw an explosion in popularity of southern Asian dishes adapted to British tastes. Most of us are familiar with the calorie-laden, rich, creamy taste of a chicken tikka masala, for example, but this is one dish that won’t be appearing on our menu any time soon!
India is a vast country and it’s therefore hard to generalise, but authentic Indian food is often vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free. This reflects people’s faith, and the affordability and availability of what’s in season.
Pulses and legumes are frequently incorporated into Indian dishes, often taking the starring role, too. Chickpea (gram) flour, rather than the “normal” version is used to thicken many sauces or vegetable curries.
Gluten Free Dishes at Indian Summer
A gluten intolerance (an allergy to wheat) can be highly unpleasant and uncomfortable if wheat is consumed. At its extreme level, (celiac disease), it goes beyond an allergy into a life-threatening condition.
Don’t let these conditions stop you from enjoying a meal at Indian Summer.
Our chefs prepare each and every dish fresh from your order. No ready-made base sources are used at all. We’re proud to say that up to 90% of the food we serve can contain non-gluten ingredients. We use rice flour, coconut, lentils and chickpea flour, which is not only safe, but also results in a satisfying, flavoursome dish that ticks all your boxes – healthy, delicious but with no compromise on taste.
Don’t forget desert. We’re happy to adapt every item on our desert menu to a gluten-free option.
Ask our staff about gluten-free dishes when you order. They know the menus inside out and can consult with our chefs to suggest the perfect alternative.
Dairy-Free Dishes At Indian Summer
If you’re intolerant to lactose (a type of sugar mainly found in milk and dairy products), you’ll know about it.
Worse still, should you have an allergy to milk or dairy products, even a tiny amount of the “white stuff” is enough to cause a severe reaction. We hardly need tell you why you need to avoid it.
But…food containing dairy is everywhere, or it seems to be. Avoiding this key food group is a full-time job. But not at Indian Summer. Classic Indian dishes can be adapted and respond extremely well to alternative ingredients without any loss of flavour. Coconut milk is a delicious alternative, for example, and as we make each dish from scratch, our chefs have the skills to adapt and modify almost everything on our menu.
There’s no need to worry. Do advise our staff if you have a dairy intolerance or allergy and we’ll be pleased to present you with a dish that’s just as perfect as those served to your fellow diners. We’ll ensure that we avoid ghee (clarified cow’s butter) and choose an equally delicious alternative to paneer (Indian cheese). Should you spot something that you’d love to try but notice it contains cream or milk, our chefs will go the extra mile to create a different sauce for you. It really is that simple.
You’ll find that many of our dishes reflect the cuisine of southern India – a rare aspect of Indian restaurants in the UK. With its emphasis on fish, this region’s food suits many dairy-free diets as it normally avoids creamy sauces.
Clearly Marked Menus
At Indian Summer, we ensure that any dairy or gluten-free dishes are clearly marked, as well as those that can be adapted.
